Grace Sheats Obituary

Grace Sheats passed away peacefully December 7, 2019 at Susqueview Home. She was a former longtime resident of 511 Woods Ave., Flemington.

Grace was born in Wood, PA, the daughter of the late Edward Burling Thomas and Anna Anderson Thomas. On July 3, 1946 she married William H. “Bill” Sheats who passed away in November 1991.

They moved from Huntingdon County, PA to Flemington in 1951. Grace was a Lock Haven University graduate and a retired Robb Elementary School teacher. She had a lifetime passion for working with and motivating children. Their success was her reward.

Grace was led by her core values of Faith, Family, Friends and Community. She was happiest when helping or caring for others.

She had a lifetime of community service, activities and volunteering since becoming a proud Flemington “Red Eye” that included: 15 year Lock Haven Hospital Volunteer; Lock Haven Hospital End of Life Care; Blood Mobile Volunteer; American Cancer Society Daffodil Day Volunteer; Flemington Board of Elections; Flemington Fire Company Women’s Auxiliary; Pennsylvania Retired Teachers Association; Flemington Sesquicentennial Planning Committee; a member of Flemington First Church of Christ since 1951 serving in numerous rolls; a 15 year volunteer, receiving Flemington emergency ambulance and fire calls, in her home, then coordinating volunteers and dispatching personnel – pre 911 in Clinton County.

Grace was also an avid traveler throughout North America, Hawaii, Europe and the Caribbean. One notable trip, as a tribute to her late husband, was to visit the beaches and bunkers of Normandy, where Bill arrived June 14, 1944, confirming her appreciation and gratitude for his sacrifices.

She was seldom idle and could find an activity, concert, play, card club and book club to keep her engaged and to be involved. There was rarely a reason to say no to a party or social event.

She is survived by Doug (Jane) of Center Valley, PA and their sons Andy and Ryan and Dan (Irene) of Lebanon, PA and their daughter Jenny Bone and son Brett and great granddaughter Ainsley Bone. She is also survived by her sister Naomi (Marty) Marcus of McConnellsburg, PA and many special nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by sister Leeda Young of Newton Falls, OH and twin brothers Bob and Ed Thomas of Fulton County, PA.

Grace was a devoted mother and grandmother, a friend & confidant to many and a servant to the community. She will be greatly missed.

A funeral service will be held Friday, December 13, 2019 at 12 Noon at Flemington First Church of Christ, 714 Canal St., Mill Hall with Rev. Mark Riley officiating. Interment will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery, Mill Hall.

Friends and family will be received at the church from 10:30 a.m. until the time of the service.
